Weak Definites

چکیده

An alternative approach to the semantics of definite descriptions was proposed by Heim in her dissertation [1982]. Heim assigns to pragmatics a larger part of the task of specifying the meaning of definite descriptions than the neo-Russellians do. In Heim’s theory, definite and indefinite NPs are semantically equivalent, and both introduce free variables. The truth conditions proposed by Heim for (1) are as follows, where x is a variable.

A unitary approach to the interpretation of definites

This paper proposes a unitary approach to the interpretation of definites which accounts for the fact that all forms of such expressions can get weak and strong readings in all types of constructions. The analysis proposed is an underdetermination account, where the universal force of definites is understood not to be determined by the grammar, but is routinely inferred at the pragmatic level. ...

Seemingly Indefinite Definites

From the time of Bertrand Russell, the semantics of the English definite article has been the object of continued semantic analysis. Most analyses make some use of the notions of uniqueness, or familiarity, however defined more precisely (see for instance Roberts, 2003, for one recent analysis and review). In this paper, though, we wish to motivate through both experimental and non-experimental...

Two kinds of definites in numeral classifier languages

Numeral classifier languages are shown to distinguish definite noun phrases licensed by uniqeness from those licensed by familiarity. Unique definites are expressed by bare nouns, while familiar definites are expressed by indexicals such as demonstrative descriptions or pronouns. This generalization parallels the observation by Schwarz (2009) that German distinguishes unique versus familiar or ...

Two Types of Definites: Evidence for Presupposition Cost

This paper investigates the notion of definiteness from a psycholinguistic perspective and addresses Löbner’s (1987) distinction between semantic and pragmatic definites. To this end inherently definite noun phrases, proper names, and indexicals are investigated as instances of (relatively) rigid designators (i.e. semantic definites) and contrasted with definite noun phrases and third person pr...

Distributivity and Dependency

Sentences with multiple occurrences of plural definites give rise to certain effects suggesting that distributivity should be modeled by polyadic operations. Yet, in this paper it is argued that the simpler treatment of distributivity using unary universal quantification should be retained. Seemingly polyadic effects are claimed to be restricted to definite NPs. This fact is accounted for by th...
